In this 15-minute TEDx talk hear Nick Tilsen, Executive Director of Thunder Valley Community, speaks about how he and his community on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation look to the past in order to understand how to build resilient and sustainable communities in the future. While naming and honoring the power of those in his community, currently and historically, Tilsen defines Pine Ridge as a place of struggle. He clearly constructs the systemic reasons why his community now struggles with poverty and notes that while the struggle is great, he and is organization come “not from a place of fear, but rather from a place of hope” as they move forward to build a resilient future for themselves.
