Kounkuey Design Initiative (KDI) is a nonprofit design organization based in Los Angeles California. KDI’s beginnings were in serving communities abroad, but more recently, the group has shifted its focus to local challenges. Patricia Leigh Brown’s article, published in the Arts section of the New York Times, reports the success of KDI’s recent work with residents of a Coachella Valley trailer park to design and build a park and zócalo (public square), to distinguish the practice from other approaches in the public interest and community engaged design field.
